About Us
Emerald Marine Carpentry is a team of shipwrights, boat builders, and carpenters from diverse backgrounds and experiences. The crew at Emerald Marine is dedicated to helping you keep your vessel in sound working condition for years to come.
Andy Stewart, Founder: After 40 years in the trade, he is grateful for the support of his clients and friends while making a life in boats. He is still involved in the shop, excited to see the legacy continue, and will balance that commitment with more sailing, small boatbuilding and enjoying time with his family.
Nicholas Brown, Current Owner: Nicholas was born in Virginia and grew up visiting family in Maine, and messing about in boats there. As a child, his father had built a couple of small boats and young Nicholas quickly realized he had somewhat of an obsession with them.
After high school and into college, Nicholas spent some time sailing traditionally rigged boats. He came to the conclusion that since most of his time as a deckhand was going to be maintenance, he might as well get ahead of the problem. That led to him to pursue jobs in Seattle boat yards, always with a focus on getting into shipwright work. Eventually he bothered John Thomas of Thomas Boat Repair in Ballard enough that he hired Nicholas on as an apprentice. He went on to have a fairly traditional apprenticeship there where he learned much of his foundation of the trade. Following, he went on to journey out and subcontracted at Emerald Marine, Rockport Marine, and was part of the Schooner Hindu rebuild in Maine.
Frank E. Brown Jr., General Manager: Frank Brown was born in San Francisco and spent 20 years as a career Coast Guard. After his time in the service, he made the move to Anacortes to attend the NW Wooden Boat School and the Skagit Valley Community College Maritime Program.
He has been with Emerald Marine since September 2018, and plays a vital role in the day-to-day operations at the shop. In his free time, Frank is a life-long sailor, having enjoyed it since he was 13-years-old.
